Frequently asked questions
Can I use any 11 or 12-digit number, or does it need to be a real GS1 code?
For an actual retail listing, no - you need a real GTIN allocated by GS1 (or resold by a GS1-licensed distributor), because each code is meant to be globally unique to your product. This tool computes the correct check digit for whatever base digits you give it, but it does not allocate or register a new code with GS1.
Can I use this to print a barcode for someone else's branded product?
No - only generate barcodes for products you own or have the rights to sell under that GTIN. Printing and using another brand's real barcode without authorization can trigger a marketplace IP complaint and listing takedown.
Does this generate FNSKU labels for Amazon FBA?
No - FNSKU is Amazon's own internal tracking barcode, generated inside Seller Central per unit, not a standard GS1 EAN/UPC. This tool only produces EAN-13 and UPC-A symbols.
Why are Code128 and other formats not supported yet?
Code128 encodes a much larger symbol table than EAN-13/UPC-A, and shipping it without a reference implementation to verify the output against risks generating barcodes that scan incorrectly - a labeling mistake that's expensive to catch after printing. It will be added once it can be properly verified.
Will the printed barcode scan correctly at actual label size?
The generated SVG scales cleanly to any print size, but always test-scan a printed sample with your actual barcode scanner or a phone scanning app before printing a full batch - printer resolution and label material both affect real-world scannability.
